Will The “Hook-Up App” Work For Straight People?

This non-everyday question is one GQ asked in their October sex-ed feature, “iBone,” where journo Marshalla Sella digs up droves of e-dirt behind Grindr, the GPS-based, meet-n-mate app for gay men. It’s an awesome story that forecasts the coming battle of technology vs. serendipity when Grindr’s lead visionary frees heteros from ostracism with 2012 unveiling of a similar app, Blendr.
Bet you chicks are already feeling damp and bothered, eh?
So GQ polled a couple sexperts regarding the aforementioned query and here’s what they had to say:
“I got letters from straight guys wondering why there aren’t women hiding in park bushes looking to have sex. I reply with a link to the FBI’s stats on rape and domestic violence”—Dan Savage, columnist
“Why do we need this? If a woman wants random sex, she can just go to a bar and pick anyone up.”—Lux Alptraum, editor of Fleshbot
“Women don’t want cock pictures. We want to watch you eat and extrapolate from that,” –Stoya, pornstar
Oh c’mon prudies, what happened to your lust for spontaneous, incognito-friendly sex?!
Since I’m a self-proclaimed sexpert myself, here’s my own damn twenty cents…
“I’m going to allow myself to believe that Grindr’s 35-year-old founder, Joel Simkhai, didn’t create Blendr as an attempt to legalize prostitution via geek-plowed loopholes. Although I’d say dude’s credibility amongst straight women is pretty dilute due to the firstborn, Simkhai’s obsession with geosocial treasures as an idea that you don’t need to travel far for a good time (whether that good timebe an impromptu group getup or an impulsive smash) is honestly a bit winsome.
Unlike Grindr, Blendr will be available as a Facebook app (Thank God for the Zuckercop!) so you canonly “hook up” with those within your “friendship” circle. Sounds more ill than lethal now, eh? Plus, dude says he wants his dad and mother on Blendr, which is like an automatic safety net for skeptics. Butthen again, who really wants to randomly meet one, two, or three of our so-called FB pals beyond thebrowser line? Bet you the answer is more than we might think.”—Tracy (@trayhova), WWMD co-host
Now its your turn horny kids! Will you be setting up a profile on Blendr? If so, would you consider using it as an F-me app? Let us know yo!
